Out and about in Norfolk.
Walsingham retains many interesting features of its famous past with its attractive
timbered gabled and Georgian houses. It is set in the loveliest parts of North
Norfolks Countryside, 5 miles inland from an unspoilt coastline of sandy beaches and
good bathing, easily accessible by car or coach.
It is particularly well placed for those interested in sailing bird watching and car
owners will appreciate the lack of traffic congestion in the area.
In the neighbourhood are the Queens country house at Sandringham with its
beautiful gardens, the Earl of Leicesters stately Holkham nom with its magnificent
state Apartments, Barshams, Tudor brick manor house where Henry V111 was entertained
on his way to Walsingham priory with its Priors lodgings and the great ruins of
Castle Rising, one time seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and the martyred Earl of Arundel. The
House at Horsham st. Faiths part of the Benedictine priory where Robert Southwell,
Jesuit Poet and Martyr was born, Burnham Thorpe, the birthplace of Nelson, is within easy
reach, where relics of the Flagship Victory are to be seen in the parish church.
Many of Norfolks famous churches of great architectural interest are close by.
The market town of Holt is one of Norfolks sought after villages with Bistros,
art galleries, antique shops and much more. Just a short distance along the coast are the
well-known bird sanctuaries and marshes at Salthouse and Cley. The village of Blakeney is
only a few miles further up the cost from where boat trips are available to see the large
seal colony and the bird sanctuary on Blakeney Point.
Sheringham and Cromer with their safe, clean beaches are only 10 and 15 miles away
respectively. Cromer stages one of the few remaining famous End of the Pier
Shows during the summer season.
The North Norfolk Steam Railway runs regular trips from Holt to Weybourne
and Sheringham, and The Holt Flyer heavy horse drawn carts provide transport
to and from the station in Holt.
Also within easy reach are several magnificent stately homes such as Blickling Hall,
only 5 miles away; and the Royal Sandringham Estate is less than an hours drive
away. Holkham Hall and the magnificent beach, where scenes from Shakespeare in Love were
filmed, are also nearby. The cathedral city of Norwich is not very far away either. |
